Exposition Description

In the course of our lives, some moments strike us with a force we have never before experienced. These moments stand like pillars in our memories, beacons of light and darkness alike, opening our minds to new dimensions, breaking down previous conceptions of our existence and challenging us to reintegrate new information into our understanding of ourselves.

Semi-Automatic: Forces Primaires is an exhibition of works that take from source-moments in the artist’s life; moments of love, death, magic and more.

Using the practice of automatism to release thoughts, feelings, memories and dreams, semi-automatic drawings or spontaneous writings are captured. These primary sources (or as the artist labels them, “masters)” can become works of art themselves. More frequently, however, the masters serve as source material for works that are planned and executed with intensified exertion and purpose. These works the artist labels “derivatives.”

In this exhibition, four types of work are presented: semi-automatic drawing masters; their derivative drawings; semi-automatic spontaneous writing masters; and their derivative text-based works. All four types of works lean heavily on the visual impact of language, and incorporate the repetition of symbols, characters, shapes and motifs. Each type of work copes with various constraints, limitations and imperfections. Nevertheless, they all seek to create lines of communication, raw or constructed, between the art and the viewer using only black markings on white paper.

The artist has also chosen to include one sculptural work, also in black and white, as an example of the repetition of a single, three-dimensional shape.
